iPhone and iPad: How to Use the Hidden Document Scanner

If you own an iPhone or an iPad, you won’t have to buy a fancy all-in-one printer if you need to sign, scan, and send an important document. Aside from the fact that this beautiful piece of technology has its own built-in scanner, the process of getting the most out of this hidden feature is extremely simple!

How to Scan Documents with an iPhone or iPad

• Make sure that the document is placed on a flat surface and in a well-lit spot.  
• Go to the Notes app.
• You can choose to open an existing note or create a new one. To make it easy for you to locate the documents you’ve scanned, create a folder and label it “Scanned Documents.”
• Tap on the camera icon before tapping Scan Documents. Once the camera opens, don’t push the shutter button yet. Be sure to follow the prompts that you see on the screen to get the best results.
• You’ll see a yellow box as the camera scans and looks for the document. Watch out for tips that say “get closer” while your iPhone or iPad searches for the corners and edges of the document as you hold your device directly above it.
• Press the shutter button if your device is having a hard time identifying the document.
• Once the document is identified, a scan will be automatically captured. You should see a small thumbnail of each page at the bottom-left corner of your screen. The scanner remains open and ready to scan multiple pages.
• Tap Save when you’re done.  

How to Sign, Share, or Save the Scanned Document

After scanning the document, you can choose to keep it in your Notes app, or you can also sign and share it.

• Tap the share button found at the top-right corner of your screen so you can bring up the share sheet when you’re viewing your document.
• Tap Markup, which is found below the app shortcuts, so you can add your signature.
• Tap “+” to view all the markup tool options, including write, draw, add text, and add a signature.
• You can choose to save the document to the Files app or email it.
