How to Test Apple Silicon Macs and Intel Macs Using Apple Diagnostics

Did you know that people used to refer to Apple Diagnostics as a Apple Hardware Test? If you own a newer Mac that runs macOS Big Sur, you can expect to find this system-integrated feature on it. Apple Diagnostics works to check your computer for any hardware problems.

Why Use Apple Diagnostics?

Do you encounter hardware issues with your Mac? Thanks to Apple Diagnostics, you can easily identify the hardware component that might have triggered the problem. Aside from diagnosing issues with your Mac’s memory, logic board, and wireless components, this tool can also serve up possible solutions and connect you with Apple Support if you need more help.

Before anything else, be sure to shut down your Mac by choosing Apple Menu and tapping Shut Down from the menu bar. Disconnect all of your external devices except for your mouse, keyboard, display, and ethernet connection. Connect your Mac to a power outlet and follow these steps:

Steps for Using Apple Diagnostic on Your Apple Silicon Mac

  • Turn on your Mac. Keep on pressing the power button and hold it as your computer starts up.
  • As soon as you see the startup options window, release the power button. You should see the internal disk icon and the gear icon that’s labeled Options.
  • The next step is to press the Command-D key combination on the keyboard.

Steps for Using Apple Diagnostic on Your Intel Mac

  • Press the power button to turn on your computer.
  • Press and hold the D key on the keyboard while your Mac starts up.
  • Be sure to release the D key when you’re asked to choose a language or when the progress bar appears.

Apple Diagnostics will automatically start to run on your Mac once you’ve completed the steps mentioned above. As soon as it’s finished testing your Mac, it’ll show the results and the reference codes that will help you determine potential issues. You may repeat this test by pressing Command-R or clicking Run the test again. You may also tap Restart or Shut Down.
