How to Fix Keyboard Typing Lag on Your iPhone or iPad

Have you been noticing some lagging issues when you’re typing your iMessage, mails, or text messages on your iPhone or iPad? These 1-to-3-second keyboard lags can be fixed!

Troubleshooting Steps on Fixing Keyboard Lags

First, be sure to have the latest version of iOS or iPadOS and have all of your apps are updated. Head to Settings ˃ General ˃ Software Update.

STEP 1: Reset Your Keyboard Dictionary

  • Tap Settings on your iPhone.
  • Tap General before tapping Reset.
  • Tap Reset Keyboard Dictionary.
  • Enter your passcode before following the instructions that flash onscreen.  

STEP 2: Restart Your Device

For iPhone X, 11, 12, and iPad model that doesn’t have a Home button:

  • Press and hold the Power along with the Volume Up or Down buttons.
  • Once you see the Power Off slider, drag it and wait for the iPhone or iPad to shut off.
  • Next, press and hold the side button until the Apple logo is seen.

For other iPhone and iPad models:

  • Press and hold the Power button until the Power Off slider appears.
  • Drag the slider to the right and wait for your device to power off.
  • Press and hold the Power button and wait for the Apple logo to appear.  

STEP 3: Remove, Restart and Re-Add Keyboard

  • Head to Settings ˃ General ˃ Keyboard.
  • Tap Keyboard.
  • Add a keyboard if you only have one such as English (US).  
  • Tap Edit before tapping the Delete button next to the keyboard you intend to delete.
  • Restart your device.
  • Head to Settings ˃ General ˃ Keyboard ˃ Keyboards.
  • Tap Add New Keyboard before choosing a keyboard from the list.

STEP 4: Force Restart the Device

For iPhone 8, X, 11, or 12 and iPad that doesn’t have a Home button:

  • Press and release the Volume Up button before pressing and releasing the Volume Down button.
  • Press and hold the Power button until the Apple logo is seen.

For iPhone 7 models:

  • Press and hold the Volume Down buttons and the side or top until the Apple logo is seen.

For iPhone 6 and iPad with a Home button:

  • Press and hold the Home along with the side or top buttons until the Apple logo is seen.
