What Exactly is Lidar?

The term lidar stands for “light detection and ranging”. This new feature allows you to enhance your portrait mode images and take shots with blurry backgrounds in night mode. What makes this new feature even cooler is that it measure the distance of an object by bouncing lasers off of it.  

The length of time it takes for the light to get back to the lidar sensor determines the measurement of the object’s distance. It’s important to note that the sensor’s technology isn’t anything new. This same technology is usually used in self-driving cars.

How to Measure a Person’s Height Using the iPhone 12 Pro’s Camera

The lidar scanner that’s built into your iPhone 12 allows you to measure a person’s height in a matter of seconds. Here’s how:

• Head over to the Measure app on your iPhone.
• Point your iPhone’s rear camera at someone who’s sitting or standing.

• Get their entire body in the frame – from head to toe.
• You should see a line above the person’s head that shows an estimate of their height. Their hat will be included if they’re wearing one.
• Tap the shutter button to take a picture of the measurement and have it saved to your camera roll.

You can expect the measurement to be accurate within approximately half an inch. If the subject has curly hair, the measurement may become slightly higher. Alternatively, if they comb their hair down, the measurement will become more accurate.

Furthermore, certain factors that include the angle of the subject’s head or if they’re wearing a hat may cause small changes to the reading. In any case, you can come up with a rough estimate of more than just your subject’s height by using the Measure app. You can also use this to obtain the dimensions of pieces of furniture and other household objects!
