Guide to Setting Up Apple TV Without a Remote

If, for some reason, your Apple TV remote has gone missing or isn’t responding. Did you know there are different ways to set up your Apple TV without the remote? As long as you have an iPhone or an iPad, you’re golden with the remote app! However, using the Remote app to control your Apple TV will only work if your Apple devices are connected to the same router.  

Before you begin, you have to make sure that your Apple TV is connected to your television using an HDMI cable. If it isn’t turned on, simply unplug it from its power source and plug it back in.

3 Options for Setting Up Your Apple TV Without a Remote

Bluetooth Keyboard

If you’re using a Bluetooth keyboard to set up your Apple TV, you can keep your Apple ID and Wi-Fi setup simple by keeping your iPhone handy. First, turn on your Apple TV and put your keyboard in pairing mode. Next, enter the code that appears on the TV into your keyboard.  

During the setup process, navigate using the keyboard’s arrow and enter keys. To save time in the future, choose the iOS device to automatically set up Apple ID and Wi-Fi.  

iPhone and an Ethernet Cable

Make sure that your Apple TV, your actual TV, and your router are close enough for the ethernet cables to reach. Using an ethernet cable, plug your Apple TV into your router. Update your iPhone to the latest iOS, sign in to iCloud, and turn on your two-factor authentication for your Apple ID. Next, got to iCloud Settings and turn on iCloud Keychain and turn on Bluetooth while connecting to your Wi-Fi.

Go to the Today Page in your App Library to open the Remote app. Click on Add Apple TV. Enter the code you see on the TV screen into your phone to pair it with your Apple TV.
