Apple TV: How to Make Movies Look Better by Using Your iPhone?

Did you know that you can use the color tuning feature on your older Apple TV model? This is one of Apple’s updates and flashy new features that allows you to use just your phone to tune the color of your TV. However, it’s important to note that this only works with your iPhone and your Apple TV.

How to Optimize Your Picture Using Your iPhone

Your viewing experience largely depends on your TV optimization settings. Unless you dive into specific settings, you won’t be able to successfully fine-tune your picture. However, depending on the kind of show or movie you’re watching, the right balance of settings changes.

To use this new Color Balance feature, you’ll need to use an iPhone X or a newer model that comes with Face ID and is running iOS 14.5 or later, an Apple TV 4K that runs TVOS 14.5 (first-generation and later), and an Apple TV HD that runs TVOS 14.5. Here’s how you can use your iPhone to color balance your Apple TV:

  • Launch the Settings App on your Apple TV.
  • Head over to Video & Audio.
  • Scroll down to find the Calibration section and select the Color Balance option.

Is your TV using Dolby Vision? Don’t panic if this option grays out because this only means that your TV has already been properly tuned. If you want to select the option, simply follow these steps:

  • Unlock your iPhone before bringing it close to your Apple TV. An alert should show up on your phone to ask you if you prefer to use the device to color-calibrate your TV.
  • Be sure to tap Continue before you follow the instructions on your iPhone.
  • Hold your phone inside the giant rectangle that appears on your TV.
  • Be sure to have your iPhone’s front-facing camera facing an inch away from the screen.
  • Before the calibration process starts, you should feel a haptic vibration coming from your iPhone.
  • Hold your iPhone still as different colors flash through the screen so that it can measure and record the colors. This information will be used to tune the colors and give you a better picture.
  • Once the process is completed, you’ll be able to switch back and forth between an unbalanced and balanced preview.
