5 Must-Have Tips for Freeing Up Storage Space on Mac

Is your Mac running low on disk space? If your device has an SSD drive that’s a few years old, don’t be surprised if your movies, videos, or games have used up a lot of your disk space. The good news is a shortage of available space on your Mac’s storage drive doesn’t mean it’s the end of the world. You can still do something to clear some room.  

What You Can Do to Free Up Storage Space on Your Mac

Check Your Available Storage

To see your Mac’s available storage, head over to the Apple Menu and click About This Mac. If you click Storage, you’ll be able to check how much open storage space you have left. You’ll also see the various file categories that are occupying space via a visual representation. If you want to check the number of used GB per category, simply hover the pointer over the colored bars.  

Manage Your Storage Space

The next step is to open Storage Management by clicking the Manage button. The Storage Management window serves up suggestions for storage optimization. You’ll see the space used by different file categories will be seen on the left side of the screen. You’ll see various suggestions for optimizing your available storage space in the window’s main part.

Store in Your iCloud Drive

You can free up a considerable amount of disk space by storing your files on your iCloud Drive. By clicking on Store in iCloud, you’ll be able to keep your full-resolution photos, messages, and files from the folders on your desktop and documents. The best part about storing these files in iCloud is that they can also be readily available on your other devices.  

Optimize Your Storage

Do you want to remove the shows and movies that you’ve already watched? Just click Optimize next to Optimize Storage. Don’t worry; you can still download them again.  

Delete Items in The Trash

Free up more space by emptying Trash. Items that have been in it for over 30 days can be automatically deleted.
